Chittagong Port Outer Anchorage: Navigate with Precautionary measures

Outer bar, Gupta bend and Cutting bend are the three areas in the Chittagong port channel where current is distinctive in nature, strength and rate. Here the Natural tidal stream averages to upto 6 kts. In summer flood tides that assumes critical/confused direction at these crucial points. At current tends to move vessel’s bow to starboard needs to check with higher steeringspeed responding helm. There are regulations in place to ensure safety of navigation inthese difficult areas where a number of serious accidents have taken place. Anchorage “A” is formed by extending 2 (Two) lines up to port limit, one (1st ) having bearing 337° 4 5΄and the other (2nd ) 310° 30΄ form the point having lat 22° 12΄ 30˝ N and long 91° 47΄ 00˝ E. Anchorage “B” is formed in between 4th and 5th line having bearing 234°extended up to port limit from the previous point. Anchorage “C” is between 4th and 5th line having bearing 2340 & 157°respectively,extended up to Port limit from a point of lat 22°12΄00” N and long 91° 47΄12” E. The space between 3rd and 4th lines is prohibited anchorage

The weather in Bangladesh is largely governed by the monsoon. The prevailing wind directions are from south to south east during the month of April through September. After taking easterly direction for a while, The wind turns to the northerly and north easterly directions, The latter prevail from November to January. During the month of February and March, winds turn via westerly direction back to the transition periods between monsoon and season in May, October and November, extreme of inclement weather like cyclones often occur with wind velocity in excess of 30 knots. The waves are generally low showing distinct relation with the wind. The waves period vary between 3-4 seconds of waves of about 0.5 meters and about 6 seconds for waves of 2 meters. During the months May to October, freshets are expected.
